Please explain how energy is generated in the core of a star during the second stage of its life cycle

-i do think its because of the hydrogen gas and converting it into helium that causes it. Hydrogen is the light of stars, and is always thrown around in the core to form a helium atom, and with a few thousand tons per second, itll be pretty bright with the exception ov a brown dwarf and a black, or a white.......
astronomy homework and i cant find it in the book/internet anyway hahaha please help ! thanks!
