Was mankind engineered by aliens from another planet or from the future

I think aliens genetically engineered the human species as an experiment but I am not 100% sure of the details. Does anyone know for sure?
My dad thinks that our lives are being influenced by the future version of mankind (coming back in time to make changes and allow survival).
Just wondering if you have any opinions about it.
