The ring wasn't itself floating around in space, Saturn had almost, but little less than 5 billion years to make his ring which is made mostly of ice (99%+) and which was attracted by gravity. What makes you think none of them crashed to Saturn? Yes, slow "particles" of this ring crashed to Saturn because they couldn't circle around the planet. Saturn's rings probably formed when objects like comets, asteroids or even moons broke up in orbit around Saturn due to Saturn's very strong gravity. The pieces of these objects kept colliding with each other and broke into even smaller pieces. These pieces gradually spread around Saturn to form its rings.

-
You are very misinformed. One or more of Saturn's moons, many of them are captured asteroids, got within Saturn's gravitational Roche limit and were torn apart, creating the rings. The rings are temporary and cannot exist without Saturn. There was NO ring floating around in space without Saturn, or Jupiter, or Uranus or Neptune. ALL of the Jovian planets have rings, but only parts of Saturn's rings are covered with water ice, and even Saturn's Crepe ring is just as dark as the other rings of the Jovian planets.
