If your hand happens to be near the pan, you might get a burn from the splatter of hot tomatoey goodness. When the sun spatters, it has to travel 93,000,000 miles before it hits the Earth.......

Imagine that the sun is like a big bubbling pot of spaghetti sauce.

Once in a while a big bubble bursts and some of the sauce spatters out of the pan. If your hand happens to be near the pan, you might get a burn from the splatter of hot tomatoey goodness.

When the sun spatters, it has to travel 93,000,000 miles before it hits the Earth. It has to go through all of the layers of our atmosphere, and by then it has usually lost enough of its kick that it does little more than mess up certain radio transmissions. Once in a while satellites will get zapped a bit and once in a great while some of our electrical infrastructure gets a zap.

On the list of things to worry about that might kill you, a solar flare is on par with dying from hot spaghetti sauce.

Nothing unusual is happening. The Sun is coming out of solar minimum with an increase in sunspots. Occasionally solar flares erupt from these spots and a good one erupted a couple days ago. This happens from time to time, and there is no threat to the Earth from them as the Earth's magnetic field protects us.

-
Solar flares are caused by magnetic storms on the sun, which repel plasma and lower that spot's temperature, creating a sun spot. These have a cycle of about 11 years, and we are just coming out of a minimum. When the magnetic field in these storms collapses, a solar flare occurs, which is the most violent event on the Sun. It gives off particles called the solar wind. When this comes into contact with Earth, it reacts with our magnetosphere, exciting the atoms in the atmosphere so they give off light, creating the beautiful auroras that we call the northern (or southern) lights.

-
The sun has a cycle of about 11 years where it goes from very quiet (called "minimum") to active (called "maximum"). Active means sunspots and more solar flares and other magnetic phenomenon.
The most recent 11-year cycle started in January 2008, so the sun is getting a little more active (the next maximum will be in early 2013).

Its nothing unusual, its nothing to be worried about.

Great,

no we might see some nice auroras.

Cheers!

comet ELENIN is happening to the sun and a few more comets that are all turning up at the same time. It may get messy.

-
Nothing to worry about. Happens from time to time and very little effect on anything on earth.

Solar flares

-
there was a solar flare nothings going to happen but this one was bigger than usual

-
Oh sweet! Anyone know when we will see any effect?
