Let me ask you. How much would you be willing to pay to have?
- the metric system
- malaria vaccine
- rubber

and then tell me how your life would be better without rubber tires, or malaria vaccine for those people who have to travel abroad.

Is perpetual war worth the cost? A sane person with a knowledge of history would argue "NO". However, those spending America's purse-strings are not sane, and that is where the priority goes.

So whether or not you think exploration is worth the cost is moot, because we don't get to decide. And the money for exploration will be gone as the US goes bankrupt.
