the "dark" comes from the fact that no one knows what it is (dark matter, same concept)
dark energy is the energy that is expanding the universe: space itself is expanding.
think of the universe as a batch of raisin dough. the raisins are interspersed throughout the dough. however, dark energy is just like putting the dough into the oven. it expands the dough, and makes the raisins (astronomical bodies, such as galaxies) have a greater distance between them.
