Jim say: The Sun is also getting hotter. Most scientists believe that life will end on Earth when the Sun causes Earth to be too hot to support life. That is supposed to happen in about 1 billion years when the Sun is 10% brighter than now.

The distance is too small to make any difference.
And it is a complex matter. It is not something that will concern os for a long time.

The sun is getting hotter as hydrogen is converted to helium in its core.
The sun gets about 10% hotter each billion years.
In a mere half billion (=500 million) years the earth will be significantly warmer so that water in the oceans will begin to evaporate.

That is offset by the earth moving away from the sun.
The sun loses mass due to its solar wind and conversion of hydrogen into energy in its core. As the sun loses mass the earth (and all the planets) move further from the sun.

Eventually, humans will have to leave the earth, or die as earth becomes too hot to support life. That point is still perhaps 2 billion years in the future.

Those two processes compensate each other to some extent.

Morningfox say: The average distance is increasing by about 1 meter per century. Since the normal swing around the average is +/- 2,500,000 kilometers per year, it's going to be a very long time before this is going to affect life on Earth. It's about 25 BILLION years, by my calculations.

A long time before that happens, the sun is going to increase its heat, and boil off all the water from Earth. Maybe even melt all the rocks.

(Yes, there were some old reports that the distance is increasing at 15 meters per century. But more recent studies put the value at around 1 to 1.5 meters per century.).

say: At 1.5cm per year, a very long time. The Moon, via the tides it creates, is stealing Earth's rotational momentum, so too is the Earth with a much, much smaller respect to the sun (I micrometer). The sun too, is losing mass and that means the Earth moves outwards very slowly as a result. (like 1.5cm per year)

Earth is moving away like 2 trillionths of a centimeter a year. Earth's distance from the Sun changes by 5 MILLION kilometers EVERY YEAR.

drake say: I didn’t know this. I’d think it would be moving closer because the little bit of air there is in the vacuum slows earth down. This means it covers less horizontal distance parallel to the sun’s surface. If this is true, in conjunction with its centripetal acceleration, it will eventually fall into the sun because the amount of distance covered horizontally would not be enough for the earth to fall vertically with the sun’s surface.
