If we live on the 3rd planet of the sun, how come we do NOT feel the earth moving? do you know ?

answers:
Adullah M say: When you sit on a plane flying at altitude 10 km at the speed of 850 km/hr and the sky is cleared ,can you tell whether you are moving above the earth surface at that speed or you merely sit still on seat.
-
ngc7331 say: gravity is a harsh mistress
-
Tom S say: Yes, I do. We cannot feel motion! We can only "feel" change in motion (accelerations). The accelerations associated with the Earth's motions are very subtle and constant. While on a jet in smooth air we cannot feel our airspeed of around 600 mph.
-
Fred say: The ____ turtle slipped on the ice and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
-
Clive say: Because it is moving at a steady speed and we are moving along with it. Therefore you don't notice anything happening. Same as with anything you travel in on Earth with silent engines on a totally non-bumpy road if you can't see out - there's nothing to tell you if you're moving or not, unless it accelerates or decelerates.
-
Ronald 7 say: Because we are moving with it
When you are on a Jet Airliner you could be moving at up to 400 miles per hour or more
Yet because you are in it you don't get that sensation
Same in a Car going at 60 mph if you toss a tennis ball up it will still come down straight. though technically it would have arced due to the movement of the car over the road
-
busterwasmycat say: because we do not actually detect motion, we detect change in motion. The change is essentially 0 (not precisely, but still very small compared to our sensory detection limits).

It would serve no purpose to have that constant motion intruding upon our brain, anyway, so a life form that developed such a sense would tend to be more likely to die out from being distracted by useless info.
-
Eric say: The Earth is not a planet and it does not revolve around anything. They will tell you that the Earth is spinning on its axis at a thousand miles per hour and revolving around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour and that the entire galaxy is hurtling through the solar system at millions of miles per hour, yet we feel nothing. Why? Because it's all a lie.
-
Donut Tim say: Humans don't have the ability to sense motion at all. We can sense acceleration, that is, "change" in motion.
-
Starrysky say: Ride down a smooth straight new freeway in a large car with your eyes shut. Feel the motion?
Ride a passenger train on smooth straight track with your eyes closed. Feel the motion?
Ride in a passenger ship on a smooth ocean in a straight line. Feel the motion?
Ride on the Earth, which is billions of times larger than all the cars, trains and ships put together, as it glides around the sun in the vacuum of space. Feel the motion?
-
drake say: Inertia
-
poldi2 say: Because we are moving along with it. Its like being on a moving train, you don't feel it moving unless it is changing direction or speed. The Earth doesn't change direction or speed.
-
Robert say: The turtle is stationary.
-
CarolOklaNola say: Yes I DO know. It is. because we are moving g withe the SAME velocity as our location on Earth moves.
-
sparrow say: Because it's constantly moving, and we're moving along with it.
It doesn't "ride" over bumps, and never slams on the breaks, so you don't feel it.
-
Chris Ancor say: Mainly because the atmosphere is moving along with you at the same rate.
-
Dixon say: Please, please, please tell me just this one thing: If the Earth is moving, what are you expecting to feel?

Your question gets asked a lot, it has even been a UK primary school (grade school) SAT question - utterly ridiculous imho. But surely it is impossible to answer without knowing what the questioner assumes you SHOULD feel. So one more time, what are you expecting to to feel?

Added:
And yet again, no one will answer. Don't they know what they expected to feel, or are they afraid of saying and looking like idiots?
