Mutating human genes to make "X-men"

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-19] [Hit: ]
This has been documented in humans...http://singularityhub.com/2009/06/30/sup…Cowshttp://en.wikipedia.......
I'm asking this in a hypothetical, ethical issues aside, strictly for a novel sense. Is it possible, using genetic engineering and stem cell research and such to mutate genes and create super human, almost x-men like people? For example, take a person who happens to be genetically stronger than most, is it possible to enhance that strength? I know scientist would first need a complete template of the human genome specifically, but how and could it be possible in the far far far away future?

Most of the powers posessed by the X-Men are physically impossible for people to have. However there are mutations that cause things like super human strength. For example, a mutation on the gene myostatin gene can result in abundant muscle growth and unusual strength. This has been documented in humans...

There haven't been very many documented cases in humans, however one man was said to be able to lift 300lb boulders with little problem.

Some of those 'superpowers' would be achievable, however, most of them are purely fictional. Scientists have already discovered genes affecting strength, speed, stamina and quality of eyesight. So, when the ethics will allow, we are nearly ready to create the 'better ourselves'. Also, you can achieve some of these powers in different ways. Imagine an orbital station, which rotates so fast, that it creates more than 1G inside (see artificial gravity). If someone would gave a birth to a baby on this station and raise it in there, after some 15 years, the child would be able to do amazing things back on the Earth. It would be the same as for ordinary human on the Moon - you could jump twice as high and so on.

Maybe not to X-men level, but yes, there are tricks scientists could use to genetically enhance a person's strength before they were born. For instance, there is something called the Superman syndrome, where males are born with an extra Y chromosome(XYY). Theoretically, a person could be engineered to have this "disorder" upon birth to have superior strength.
