Blue/White screening

If I dont use x-gal in blue/white screening, then what colonies would grow. My guess is that the colonies that are ampicillin resistant would grow and they would be white? Is this correct?-If you didnt add ampicillin while doing blue/white screening the colonies without plasmid would grow and since there is no plasmid containing the LacZ gene, there would be no blue color and those colonies would be white along with those colonies that have the plasmid with the correctly placed insert.......
If I did not add ampicillin while doing blue/white screening, then I know that the colonies that did not pick up the plasmid would grow. However, I am not sure what color these colonies will be?

If you didn't add ampicillin while doing blue/white screening the colonies without plasmid would grow and since there is no plasmid containing the LacZ gene, there would be no blue color and those colonies would be white along with those colonies that have the plasmid with the correctly placed insert. This is why you must add amp to eliminate colonies without plasmid.

If you don't use X-gal, but you do use ampicillin, then any colony that has a plasmid will grow and they will be white because you need to X-gal to make the blue color.
