How is burning Mg a synthesis chemical reaction

In Chem class we lit Mg on fire and let it burn. It says on the lab paper that it's a synthesis reaction but how would you balanced that?

2 Mg + O2 → 2 MgO

Magnesium oxide is being synthesized.
