Confused about making Lewis Dot Structure

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-10-29] [Hit: ]
all elements want to FILL their valence shells. Oxygen may naturally have 6 valence electrons, but it WANTS 8. Therefore, when oxygen binds with calcium, they share calciums two valence electrons so both are more stable.......
CaO

When I looked at Ca I looked at the group which was 2 so I thought Ca 2+
Now this part is confusing me, it is O . when I looked at the group there are 6 Valance Electrons
But the answer shows
====== ..
C 2+ [ :O: ] 2-
======..

why is their EIGHT dots around oxygen. if there is only 6 Valence electrons.

Other than hydrogen, all elements want to FILL their valence shells. Oxygen may naturally have 6 valence electrons, but it WANTS 8. Therefore, when oxygen binds with calcium, they share calcium's two valence electrons so both are more stable.
