Please help me!-Assume 100 g of the compound is present. This changes percents to mass. Now,MgSO4 ---> 48.8 g / 120.......
I have tried to figure this out! what is the answer? And how do you do this problem??? Please help me!

Assume 100 g of the compound is present. This changes percents to mass. Now, calculate moles:

MgSO4 ---> 48.8 g / 120.366 g/mol = 0.40543 mol
H2O ---> 51.2 g / 18.015 g/mol = 2.8421 mol

Look for a whole number ratio:

MgSO4 ---> 0.40543 / 0.40543 = 1
H2O ---> 2.8421 / 0.40543 = 7

MgSO4 · 7H2O
