CuSO4 + Zn ---> ZnSO4 + Cu Question

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-06-13] [Hit: ]
can someone caluclate it for me or if not tell me how i can get the answer to how many mL of HCl is needed-you could add HCl. this will dissolve the Zn and leave the Cu alone.if the solution is still blue,if the solution is clear and zinc is still present as a solid,0.3gZn / 65.......
this is a experiment i am doing in class. i am using .3 grams of zn and 1 gram of CuSO4. we know that when the reaction is done there will be copper left in the end. but my question is that it won't be all copper but a little zinc on the copper still. how can i get rid of the zinc so that i only have copper.

can someone tell me if i use HCL Acid how much will i need it or how will i calculate it so that i know how many ml of HCL acid is needed??

i know i need a couple of drops but i have to give a report and show calculations on how i knew how much hcl i needed. can someone caluclate it for me or if not tell me how i can get the answer to how many mL of HCl is needed

you could add HCl. this will dissolve the Zn and leave the Cu alone.
if the solution is still blue, you could add more zinc
if the solution is clear and zinc is still present as a solid, add more CuSO4

the amount of HCl all depends upon the balanced equation
CuSO4 + Zn --> ZnSO4 + Cu
0.3gZn / 65.38g/mole = 0.00459moles Zn
this will convert 0.00459moles Cu2+ to Cu
1g CuSO4 / 159.5g/mole = 0.00627moles

assuming that the reaction goes to completion, there should be no Zn left over and the solution should be slightly blue. dry the copper and add 1 drop of HCl to the solid, dry copper. as long as the HCl is 0.5M or more, 1 drop should do it because at this point, this is 'cleaning' the copper and theoretically NOT dissolving the excess Zn.
