By the way, it is Thomson, no Thompson. There is no "p" in his name.

Dalton's atomic theory was a step forward for chemistry and followed the ideas first proposed by Democritus. The idea of atoms was well received by some chemists of the day, and rejected by others. Thomson accepted the idea of atoms and added the existence of a subatomic particle, the electron. This refuted some of Dalton's ideas.

Dalton said that atoms were the smallest possible particles and that they could not be subdivided. Dalton didn't know about subatomic particles, while Thomson knew that the electron was a subatomic particle.

Dalton said that all atoms of the same element were the same. We now know that they are not because we know about isotopes with different numbers of neutrons. But neither Dalton nor Thomson knew about isotopes or neutrons. Frederick Soddy proposed the existence of isotopes in 1912. The existence of the neutron wasn't confirmed until 1932 by James Chadwick

The strength of the early atomic theories was that atoms existed. Thomson's atomic theory built on Dalton's theory but acknowledged the existence of subatomic particles.
