I'm doing a school project and need to answer this question.

Many:

- volcanoes met pyroclatic flows, a firey cloud of hot ash and gas that rolls down a mountainside and vaporizes or burns everything it touches.

- lava flows do more or less the same thing, but are slower and less destructive.

- eruptions also triggerlandslides that can compose of millions of tons of rock. A single landslide can burry an entire village and even fill in valleys. If a landslide falls into a bady of water, it can trigger a megatsunami, or supersonic wave that is usually over 100 feet high.

- tremors caused by eruptions can be strong, but usually are not powerful enough to destroy homes.

- large eruptions (VEI 6 or higher) can release enough sulfur dioxide to cause a nuclear winter. In other words, the sulfur dioxide will reflect sunrays in the stratosphere, causing a drop in temperature that can wipe out growing seasons and lead to famines. This happened at Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815 the following summer, no crops survived and over 90,000 people died of famine.

- lahars are volcanic mudflows caused by glacial melt combined with falling ash. They move very quickly and are extremly dense. If moving fast enough, they can level forests and devour houses. The remaining deposits then solidify into a very strong cement. At Mount Pinatubo (Phillipines) in 1991, lahars were also caused by monsoons (hurricanes) as rainwater collected into pyroclastic deposits left by the eruption. These lahars burried several villages forever.

- ashfall can smother crops and burry the soil for many years. However, a light can be good for crops because volcanic ash contains some vital nutriens that enrich the soil. Other ways ashfall can affect humans is by asphictiation from inahling it (the ash cements in your lungs and suffocates you), or if it collects on rooftops, houses will collapse because ash is almost ten times as dense as snow.

I hope you do well on your project! :)

I guess the definition of "school project" has changed since I was in school - when I had a project I was supposed to do the research myself, not ask someone else.

Volcanoes can cause earthquakes. Earthquakes can cause buildings to collapse.
Volcanoes can eject lava. Lava burns everything it contacts (crops, buildings, people).
Volcanoes can emit toxic gases. Toxic gases can kill people and animal.

Its not hard if you just think about what a volcano can do.
A little reading can't hurt anyone.

Look up:
Lahars
Pyroclastic Flows
Lava Flows
Tsunamis
Earthquakes
Landslides
Explosions
Toxic gases
Acid Rain / VOG
Volcanic Ash

These are all volcanic hazards.
