-The world wont end, basically people think the world will end in 2012 because they say the Mayan calendar says it does. They are incorrect because the Mayan calendar in 2012 marks the END of a 5126 year era. Then their calendar starts over to another year era. Some jerk made it up to scare everyone.-The most common theory is based off the Mayan calender ending on that date.......
OK so I heard a lot about this prediction about the end of the world in 2012. To be honest I am really scared! Can someone tell me what is going on. I know there are a lot of people who already asked this question but the best answers didn't really make sense to me.Also can you give me proof that is easy to understand?

The world won't end, basically people think the world will end in 2012 because they say the Mayan calendar says it does. They are incorrect because the Mayan calendar in 2012 marks the END of a

The most common theory is based off the Mayan calender ending on that date. However it doesn't actually say the world will end, it states that it will be the end of an age. The reality is that the Mayans thought of time as more of a circular thing and when one age ends another begins and you start over. The other predictions people have come up with could actually happen tomorrow or ten years from now and there isn't actually anything you can do about it so why worry.

The great thing about scientific literacy is it allows one to critically evaluate the purported evidence for such claims. If you can do that, you don't have to live in fear. You could thus dismiss such nonsense as photon belts, solar storms, pole reversals, planetary alignments and Planet X. You could also realize that a "supervolcano" eruption at Yellowstone is decidedly unlikely during your lifetime.

Barring that, a good historical understanding helps. At its best, you'd realize the base premise of a "Mayan prophecy" is on shaky ground as there's no evidence that the Mayans even made such a prediction, or had a concept of a doomsday. Minimally, you'd realize that this doomsday just repeats an odd mish-mash of predictions for past doomsdays which never happened, and that purported ancient prophecies are a lousy predictor of anything.
