Why do we not build stuff like we did long ago

I was watching our local news this morning, and they were showing a place called Little Norway.
They showed what it was like when Norwegians first immigrated to our state.
The churches and homes were so incredible.
It's like the Castles and Cathedrals.
I always thought if I won the lottery, I would build a Beautiful place like that. It wouldn't have to be large, but detailed and it would have character.
Is it just to costly, time consuming or just a change in taste?
Why do we not build such Beautiful places anymore?

You already answered your own question. You need to win the lottery to have such a building.

Costs too much money.
