If the mass of beryllium is 9, I don't understand why there can be an isotope with the same mass.

The term isotope applies to all masses for a particular element. Thus H1, H2 (deuterium) and H3 (tritium) are all isotopes of hydrogen, but only H1 is the common one found in nature. Same with Be9
