There is a reason for young children to fill in their times tables.
It is memorization that allows me to know that 6 x 7 = 42.
If you are trying to teach it to someone, or learn it yourself, you should probably just spend a lot of time filling in a 10 x 10 square or even better a 12 x 12 square and learn your multiples.
