9*10^9 that is the power of 9 so 8.9*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10 so each ten adds the previously removed zeros.8.9*10^92. Write the following number in scientific notation: 0.000631it works with neg.......
in this case it is 9 spaces so 10^1 is one space 10^9 would be our nine spots so 8.9*10^9 that is the power of 9 so 8.9*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10 so each ten adds the previously removed zeros.
8.9*10^9

2. Write the following number in scientific notation:
0.000631
it works with neg. spots too so here we move it 4 spots to get 6.31*10^(-4)
6.31*10^(-4)

3. Write the following number in standard notation:

7.2 x 10-4 here move the decimal 4 spots to the left since it is neg.
so .00072 not four zeros just spots

4. Write the following number in standard notation:
2.75 x 108
is that 10^8 if so it is 275000000.

5. Write the following number in standard notation:
8.9 x 10^9

here it is 8900000000.
HOPE YOU ARE GETTING IT

6. Multiply. Express the result in scientific notation:

(5 x 106)(6 x 102)
HERE YOU CAN MULTIPLY THE BEGING NUMBERS AND THEN ADD THE EXPONENTS OR THE NUMBER UP ABOVE THE 10^ SO 5*6=30 AND 10^6 WITH 10^2 GOES TO 10^8
Now your other number is not between 1 and 9.99999 so move the decimal to the left one and add 1 to the 8 to get 3.0 * 10^9

7. Multiply. Express the result in scientific notation:

(3 x 102)(2 x 102)
6.0*10^4 simple normal notation would be 60000

8. Explain how to write each number in scientific notation:

(a.) 0.00043
move the decimal to the right 4 spots to make the remaning number between 1 and 9.99999 and put a negative 4 in the exponent spot above the 10 to get 4.3*10^(-4)

(b.) 523.4 x 105
move it to the left 2 spots to get 5.234*10^2

10 ponts for the best answer.

-
count the number of places you move the decimal
8,900,000,000

8.9 x 10^?

you would have to move 9 places
8.9 x 10^9

0.000631

6.31 x 10^?

you have to move the decimal 4 places
6.31 x 10^-4

As a rule of thumb,

10^5 is just 100000, where the 5 is just how many zeros.
For a negative number, 10^-5, you count the decimal places back from 1.0, so you get .00001, if you jump the decimal point 5 times, you get 1.0 back.

Scientific notation always starts with the decimal point after the first number for example, 3.67, or 1.23.

123 is just 1.23 x 10^2, moving the decimal point 2 times to the right.
