Is this character half way plausible

.Another guy you can check out (very contemporary) is Grigori Perelman. He is quite a case. He proved the Poincaré Conjecture (another thingy very famous for mathematicians) in three papers on arXiv. arXiv is an archive for electronic preprints of scientific papers. He never really published in a real journal.......
Ashton is an amazingly talented mathematician. He is somewhat a social recluse so he doesn't work at a University, but still manages to be published in journals around the world.

It is important for him to be a recluse, but I don't know a person could actually manage to be a mathematician who "works from home" if you will.

Just check out the biography of Andrew Wiles (the guy who proved the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture for semistable elliptic curves, and thereby proving Fermat's Last Theorem).

He spent seven years working on it in the attic office of his home. :)

Hope this helps!

Edit: Some biographies on the sources.
Edit 2: Wiles did had a job at the university researching and doing academic stuff, but he never ever told anyone he was working on the other project (only his wife knew). So, yeah... i can imagine someone working at home somehow to pay the bills AND keep up with top notch math to get famous ;)

Another guy you can check out (very contemporary) is Grigori Perelman. He is quite a case. He proved the Poincaré Conjecture (another thingy very famous for mathematicians) in three papers on arXiv. arXiv is an archive for electronic preprints of scientific papers. He never really published in a real journal. He is quite passionate about that. He doesn't believe in journals and stuff. Now he announced his retirement from the math world (to the shock of the whole world), and lives in his mom's house. Told ya, quite a case.

So.. Basically, yeah. I can see that you can pull that off :)

well most mathematicians work by teaching or workin with other people so that could be hard to pull off. unfortunately not many viable jbs can be done from home but if you could come up with some way to get your character an excuse for working a home you could pull it off.
