At a store, Sara decided to buy three pieces of garnet for g dollars, two pieces of fossil shark teeth for $ 4.00 each, and a polished crystal for $10.00. Write an expression in simplest form that represents the total amount.

A. 3 g + 14
B. g + 18
C. 3 g + 18
D. 3 g + 21

** I would appreciate if you could explain how you figured out your answer. :-) **

-
3 garnets = g$
2 fossils = 8$
crystal = 10$

total = 18$ +g$

so your answer is g+18 , B

-
The secret to this is to carefully analyze the statement and form the equation.

Sara decided to buy three pieces of garnet for g dollars
- from this statement we can say that total price is g

two pieces of fossil shark teeth for $ 4.00 each, and a polished crystal for $10.00.
- stated here is the price for each garnet, to get the total (g) you have to add the individual prices;

g = 2(4) + 10 (since there are two pieces shark teeth multiply its price ($4.00) by two)
g = 18

answer: g - 18 = 0

nothing's match from the choices..i think you have a typographical error on your choices.

-
Did she spend g dollars to get the three pieces of garnet? Or did she spend g dollars on EACH of the pieces of garnet. If the former, the answer is B; if the latter, the answer is C.
Since the word "each" is used for the shark teeth, but not for the garnet, chances are it's B.

-
3 garnetts costed = $ g
2 fossil teeth @ $ 4.00 = $ 8.00
crystal = $ 10.00

total amount = $ ( g + 18.00 )
