Can someone explain this word problem? I mean how do you know what sign to use, whether it is addition or...

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-08-27] [Hit: ]
each day you will save 110 calories if you eat the second cereal, because if 220 - 110 = 110. So this goes on for the expansion of 31 days. That means in EACH of the 31 days, you save 110 calories. This basically means you save 110 calories 31 times,......

So for 31 days you are eating 110 calories each day, so:

110 x 31 = 3410

You can do this 2 ways:

FIRST) you can find the calories you will eat by choosing the first cereal

220 x 31 = 6820

then find the calories you will eat by choosing the second cereal

110 x 31 = 3410

Now subtract

6820-3410 = 3410 (the amount of calories you are SAVING)

SECOND WAY)

Find how many calories you will save in one day

220 - 110 = 110

So you are saving 110 calories a day
now multiply this by 31

110 x 31 = 3410

**Hope this helps

Don't worry, it's not too difficult.
First, if you think about it, each day you will save 110 calories if you eat the second cereal, because if 220 - 110 = 110. So this goes on for the expansion of 31 days. That means in EACH of the 31 days, you save 110 calories. This basically means you save 110 calories 31 times, and that's why you multiply it together.
Even if you use logic, for example, 110 + 31 = 141, you can't possibly save only that little amount of calories throughout the whole month, right?

Each day you would be eating 110 calories so you multiply it by the number of days. Addition wouldn't make sense because it wouldn't be adding up the 110 over the course of the 31 days, you would just be adding 31 to 110. The 'over the course of 31 days' is what gave it away for me.

Save is the keyword for the subtraction part.

not sure what the keyword is for the multiplication, but since it is repeated 31 times(days) you multiply

-
day 1 = 110
day 2 = 110 + 110 = 220 (which is the same as 2 times 110)
day 3 = 110 + 110 + 110 = 330 (which is the same as 3 times 110)

so all you're doing is multiplying the number of days by 110

key word - save
so the answer is 31 times 110 = 3410 calories saved as you save 110 calories each day

-
You take the differences between the two cereals.

220 - 110 = the difference in one day

You take on e day and multiply by the 31 days to find out how much is saved over the entire 31 day period.
