Can someone explain this word problem? I mean how do you know what sign to use, whether it is addition or...

Now I know the answer cause it is in the book. But my point is what KEY WORD gave it away for you to know that you have to MULTIPLY the 31 with 110, INSTEAD of ADDING it? By the way, the 110 is subtracted from 220-110. 10 point for best explain answer.......
multiplication. Here is the word problem question. One kind of cereal has 220 calories in each serving. Another kind has 110 calories in each serving. During a month with 31 days, how many calories would you save by eating the second kind of cereal each morning for breakfast?

Now I know the answer cause it is in the book. But my point is what KEY WORD gave it away for you to know that you have to MULTIPLY the 31 with 110, INSTEAD of ADDING it? By the way, the 110 is subtracted from 220-110. 10 point for best explain answer. HELP, I'm so confused.

how many calories would you save .... instead - so that implies comparison - what are we comparing? The difference in one calorie or the other. So we subtract those

(220-110) Now we need to know how much over a month that has 31 days, so we multiply the difference by 31:

31*(220-110)

For me, the key word that tells me to multiply is "each" - for each of 31 days says multiply by 31.

By the way my wife is a math teacher and I have heard her tell kids to use "key words" to interpret word problems. I think it is completely wrong headed to teach kids to interpret word problems like that. They should read the word problem and comprehend it. Key words are, well, what if someone uses a synonym, or confusing language? But if you just understand it, actually think about what is going on, and so forth, that is a simpler, in my opinion, way of doing it.

I am not young. But I was never taught key words, I was taught to understand the process and think about it. I never actually look for key words, I just model the word problem. try and figure out if it is a mixture problem, a rate time problem, what, if any formula applies, then I plug it in and go on. I get many more right than wrong.

The keyword is "save"

In other words, how many calories are you NOT eating when you eat the second cereal (110 calories) instead of the 220 calorie cereal
