Help With Pre-Algebra. Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides

I can't find a solution even after I worked this out 5 times. Literally.

-3k + 5(6-k) = 4(1-2k)

Please explain if you can.

Distribute the 5 over the 6 and -k, so the left side looks like:

-3k + 30 - 5k

Combine like terms:

-8k + 30

Distribute the four on the right side.

4-8k.

Now here's where your problem is..

-8k + 30 = 4 - 8k

If you attempt to add 8k like you would normally do, you get..

30 = 4.

Now, I don't know about you, but in my world, 30 doesn't equal 4. So what does that mean? That means there is no solution. That is, believe it or not, an acceptable answer, as some problems really do lack a solution.

Anytime. Here's a heads up for the future if you haven't already encountered it: at some point you'll find an equation similar to this that, when simplified, will yield something like:

4 = 4

The answer is, "infinite number of solutions", meaning yes, x can be ANYTHING.

The main objective is to isolate the variable. Remember to use the order of operations while solving.
You should start by distributing the 5 and the 4:
-3k+30-5k = 4-8k
The easiest way to get the variable on one side is to add 8k to both sides.
5k+30-5k = 4
Then combine like terms (5k-5k=0)
30=4
Because 30 does not = 4, the equation is invalid and thus has no solution.

-3k+5(6-k)=4(1-2k)
-3k+30-5k=4-8k
-3k+26-5k=-8k
-8k+26=8k
26=0
undefined/no solution
Because 26 does not equal 0 so there is no solution/answer.

You have to move like variables to the same side.

-3k + 5(6-k) = 4(1-2k)

-3k + 30 - 5k = 4 - 8k

-8k + 30 = 4 - 8k

26 = 0k

There is no solution here.

5(6-k)
30-5k
4(1-2k)
4-8k
-3k+30-5k=4-8k
-8k+30=4-8k
30=4
This means there is no solution.

30-8k = 4-8k no solution

30 5k 4 8k

-3k + 30 + 5k = 4 - 8k

2k +30= 4- 8k

-6k+30=4

-6k=-24=4

k=4
