1) 4y - 6 = 2y + 8
Add 6 to both sides
4y = 2y + 8 + 6
subtract 2y from both sides
4y - 2y = 8 + 6
reduce
2y = 14
divide both sides by 2
y = 7

2) 5(3w - 2) - 7 = 28
expand
15w - 10 - 7 = 28
add 17 to both sides
15w = 28 + 17
reduce and divide both sides by 15
15w = 45
w = 3

3) t - 2(3 - 2t) = 2t + 9
expand
t - 6 + 6t = 2t + 9
note how the negative side propagates
reduce
7t - 6 = 2t + 9
add 6 to both sides, subtract 2t from both sides
7t - 2t = 9 + 6
reduce
5t = 15
divide both sides by 5
t = 3

expand
