2x2 - 4x - 6

x2 + x - 12

the 2's after the x's are supposed to be exponents, I can' type them normally...
and also the horizontal line in the middle is supposed to be division line.

You have to use factoring solution.
2x^2 - 4x - 6
-----------------
x^2 + x - 12

(2x + 2) ( x - 3)
----------------------
(x + 4) (x - 3)

2x + 2
-----------
x + 4

2x2 - 4x - 6
-------------------
x2 + x - 12

You factor each part of the fraction: [2(x -3)( x +1)] / [(x -3)(x + 4)] and reduce:

2(x+ 1)/(x +4) as long as x isn't 3 (which would mean you've divided by zero).
