Is it Possible to times inches by centimetres to give you the metres

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-13] [Hit: ]
934.4 metres which some how he got 1.61 km out of that. I need to know if multiplying inches by cm gives you metres, and if this equation is right the one he has written for me. I really appreciate all answers.......
For my Maths project my teacher wrote some stuff in my book and I cant seem to understand it again. He has worked out 63360 inches X 2.54cm gave him 160,934.4 metres which some how he got 1.61 km out of that. I need to know if multiplying inches by cm gives you metres, and if this equation is right the one he has written for me. I really appreciate all answers. It is due tomorrow.

You don't 'times' inches by centimeters. times is a preposition not a verb (for math usage anyways). You would say "Is it possible to multiply inches by centimeters to give you meters?."

The answer is no. That would give you the units as in*cm which is not the same as meters.

To convert from inches to cm you would multiply by 2.54 cm/in
63360 in * 2.54 cm/in = 160,934.4 cm
Then you can convert from cm to km by multiplying by 1km/100,000cm
160,934.4cm * 1km /100,000cm = 1.609344km

Rounding to the nearest whole number gives you 1.61 km

1 inch = 2.54 cm
So 63360 inches = 63360*2.54 cm
1 m = 100 cm
so 63360 inches = 63360*2.54/100 m
1 km = 1000m
so 63360 inches = 63360*2.54/100000 km = 1.609 km = 1.61 km
(Also 63360 inches = 1 mile so 1 mile = 1.61 km)

He should have said 160,934.4 cm, not metres, which gives 1.61 km.
