C, and D seem right to me, but there can only be one. Can someone help me understand this concept a little clearer?-How can B and C both seem right to you?They are opposites!......
A) heat flows out of the system.
B) the internal energy of the gas increases.
C) the internal energy of the gas decreases.
D) there is no work done by the gas.
E) work is done on the gas.

How can B and C both seem right to you? They are opposites!

A: False, because, by definition, adiabatic means there is no heat flow in or out of the system (e.g. perfect insulation is used or the change is too rapid to allow time for heat flow in or out).

B: False. Imagine allowing a syringe full of compressed gas to expand suddenly, pushing the piston outwards. The gas does does work on the piston (giving it kinetic energy). Since there is no heat flow, the energy comes from the internal energy of the the gas which therefore DEcreases. The gas is cooler after the sudden expansion.

C: True - see answer to B for explanation.

D: False See answer to B

E: False. Work is done BY the gas. Work is only done on a gas when the gas is compressed. The opposite happened.
