two planes take off from the same airport and fly in opposite directions. on average, one travels at 110 miles per hour and the other at 136 miles per hour. How long will they be 983 miles apart?

Its more important I understand the formula rather than just getting the answer. thanks!

d=d1+d2
d=983= t*110 + t*136
983= t(110 +136)
t=983/246 =4 hours
