Eight years ago, Bob was 6 years as old as Mary. In 6 years, he will be twice as old as Mary. How old are they now?

Bob=x (current age)
Mary=y (current age)

x-8=6(y-8) Eight years ago, Bob was 6 years as old as Mary
x=6y-40

x+6=2(y+6) In 6 years, he will be twice as old as Mary
x=2y+6

6y-40=2y+6
4y=46

y=11.5

x=2(11.5)+6 =>x=29

bob is 29 years old , mary is 11.5
