5/8 X 8/7?......

5/8 X 8/7?

answers:
geezer say: 5/8 x 8/7

Multiply the numbers "on top" together ..... (5 x 8)
and the numbers "underneath" together ..... (8 x 7)

Giving you 40/56 .. which is 5/7

BUT .. in this case you don't have to do the multiplication !

You have (5x8) / (8x7) ... the 8's cancel each other out
leaving 5/7.

5/8 X 8/7
= 40/56
simplify it (both are divisible by 8)
= 5/7

Raymond say: To multiply fractions:

(top * top) / (bottom * bottom)

5/8 * 8/7 = (5*8) / (8*7) = 40/56
reducing the fraction
40/56 = 20/28 = 10/14 = 5/7

shortcut (in this particular case)
we see that the denominaotr of one fraction (bottom) is equal to the numerator of the other (top).
On paper (or written down on Yahoo!Answers) it looks complicated but it is something that you can do quickly in your head.

Because the result of the multiplication does care about the order of the numbers (5*8 is the same as 8*5), we can swap the numerators:

5/8 * 8/7
swap the numerators
8/8 * 5/7

8/8 is "something over itself" and that is equal to 1
1 * 5/7

multiplying by 1 changes nothing so we can drop it, and we are left with
5/7

Puzzling say: Original expression:
5 .... 8
--- × ---
8 .... 7

I'd cancel the 8s first:
5 .... 1
--- × ---
1 .... 7

Then multiply across:
5 .... 1 ... 5
--- × --- = ----
1 .... 7 ... 7
