if the elevation change is 335 m?The magnitude IS 3 m/s and the direction IS 30 degrees (relative to the direction the boat is pointed.) But if you read the question carefully you see that it asks for the direction relative to the shore. So the correct answer is 90 - 30 = 60 degrees.......
A boat can travel 2.60 m/s in still water.

Figure 3-30
(a) If the boat points its prow directly across a stream whose current is 1.50 m/s, what is the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the boat relative to the shore?
3 m/s and the degree is what? I got 30 degrees but it keeps telling me im wrong.

Also how do you do this question too? :

A skier is accelerating down a 30.0° hill at a = 3.20 m/s2
(a) What is the vertical component of her acceleration?
m/s2 (downward)
(b) How long will it take her to reach the bottom of the hill, assuming she starts from rest and accelerates uniformly, if the elevation change is 335 m?

Regarding the first question:
The magnitude IS 3 m/s and the direction IS 30 degrees (relative to the direction the boat is pointed.) But if you read the question carefully you see that it asks for the direction relative to the shore. So the correct answer is 90 - 30 = 60 degrees.
