Is it normal to get sucked into the thrusters of a ship

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-07-01] [Hit: ]
the victim will more than likely be sucked into the screws and chewed up into little pieces. If you go to the stern of a steaming cruise liner youll see why.The wake is churning like a sort-off horizontal tornado of water. So the self-made currents from the screws turning and the motion of the ship through the water have strong force vectors aimed from the surface towards submerged. And those will drag anything down and under, where the screws are.......
I was watching the movie "Speed 2" the other day and noticed how everyone who fell or was thrown into the water got sucked into the ships thrusters.
Would this happen for real or is it a little less dramatic?

Of course it's not normal; it starts out as abnormal when one falls or is thrown overboard.

But if the hapless overboard victim ends up anywhere close to the stern of the ship and the screws are still churning, yes, the victim will more than likely be sucked into the screws and chewed up into little pieces.

If you go to the stern of a steaming cruise liner you'll see why. The wake is churning like a sort-off horizontal tornado of water.

So the self-made currents from the screws turning and the motion of the ship through the water have strong force vectors aimed from the surface towards submerged. And those will drag anything down and under, where the screws are.

There is also a backwash at the stern. That takes whatever is pulled under the water back toward the ship... again towards the turning screws.

It is real and very threatening to anyone who falls overboard. And that's why the very first command from whomever has control on the bridge when first hearing "man overboard" is "All engines stop." The hope is that the screws will stop in time to prevent them from chewing up the victim. [See source.]

Well, it hasn't happened to me ... yet.
