When mars was first viewed closely through a telescope, there appeared to be lines crisscrossing its surface that were thought to be canals. This was taken as a sign of intelligent life, and started the idea that there might be a civilization on mars. As telescopes improved new observations discounted the previous ones and the canals were refuted.

When the Mariner spacecraft flew past and the first close up images of the martian surface were transmitted back to Earth, astronomers noticed a geologic formation that appeared to be a large humanoid face, known as the face of Mars. This discovery again fueled speculation that an intelligent civilization at one time existed on mars, however subsequent images revealed the face to be nothing more than a trick of the light.

The northern and southern hemispheres of Mars are radically different geologically. The north is covered with craters, whereas the south is smoothed over by lava flows.

Speaking of lava flows, Olympus Mons, a mountain on Mars, is both the tallest mountain and larges volcano in the solar system.

Along with the tallest mountain, there is a giant rift valley cutting through the Martian surface.

While freezing and thawing water does play some small role in shaping the Martian surface, by far the largest geologically active forces on Mars are the sandstorms which can sweep across the entire surface of the planet and last for weeks.

Mars has two polar ice caps, but unlike Earth's poles, the ice is frozen carbon dioxide instead of water.

Although Mars is once though to have supported a climate similar to Earth's, with liquid water covering a large portion of the surface, because the planet is about half the size of the Earth, its gravity cannot support an Earth-like atmosphere, so Mars's atmosphere easily leaked into space and the water froze into the ground.

Scientists believe Mars is a place where life used to live because there are places where streams of water left a mark on the surface. Although this may be true it would be hard for life to live there because of the extreme temperature switches, in the morning is it extremely deadly and hot, and at night it gets so cold that you can also die. Mars also has polar ice caps.
