What exactly is a "light year"

Dougie :)-Distance a beam of light travels in a year (365.25 days).light year?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-year-.......
It's kinda a dumb question but I was wondering

-
A light year (ly) is the distance light travels in one year. The total number of miles in a light year is 5,865,696,000,000 miles.

Just a little fun fact here--- Light travels at 186,300 miles per second. If you started at the Sun and traveled at the speed of light for one year, you would still only be a quarter of the way to the closest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.2 light years away. Talk about a long vacation!

Don't get confused and think 'year' so it must be a measurement of time. It is the distance that light, c, can travel in one year. It is approximately 9.4605284 × 10^15 metres. Very long indeed. It's used on the astronomical scale because it is impractical to use even distances like miles or kilometres. Lightyears are a very basic astronomical measurement. Parsecs are a little longer and a little harder to understand, but look them up if you're interested.
Hope this helps

"... a light-year is the distance that light travels in a vacuum in one Julian year."

-
The distance light travels in one year at 186,000 miles and change per second during a 365.25 day year.

Roughly 5.8 trillion miles.

-
It is the distance that light travels in one year assuming outer space (vacuum) conditions.

-
The distance light travels in one year.

Light travels at 278,000,000 miles per hour. So, send a beam of light out into space and where it ends up in one year's time will be one light year!

The distance light travels in a year or approximately 5,850,000,000,000 miles.

-
The distance light travels in a year. It's about ten trillion kilometers.

-
It's a distance, 5.878 trillion miles.
