How would you explain the solar polarity flip to a 5 year old

With a bar or horseshoe magnet, a piece of paper or a pane of glass, some iron filings or some tacks. Toy store sometimes have science packages that have magnets and iron filings that a smart five year old can understand pretty easily. Of course, that depends on the five year old. I remember my third birthday, but a lot of people's autobiographical memory doesn't start until they are seven, eight, or even 9 years old. I don't think I was an was an extremely intelligent five year old, but I do remember my mom taking me to Audubon park by street car when it snowed in New Orleans when I was five, or just about to turn 5. I was in kindergarten, and I remember going to nursery school too, in 1956-1957.

Kids are natural scientists. I'm still trying to figure out what happens to kids to turn off their natural curiosity that turns them into bitter and insulting bullies so young.

You wouldn't they would never get it for another 8 years.
