Question about free fall

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-15] [Hit: ]
so theyd have to go almost 8 km/s to achieve an orbit that low.As the first site points out, that means youd go around the world in about an hour and a half, which is pretty ridiculous.-Actually if you jumped off a moving plane you WOULD go into orbit around the centre of the earth just the same as a satellite. Its just that it would be a very eliptical orbit which at a quarter way round would be only meters away from the centre of the earth.......

This is made clearer in the picture of Newton's cannonball in the site listed below.

Airplanes don't go high or fast enough to achieve free fall.

In my sources section, there's a website that has an equation that describes the necessary relationship for height and speed to achieve a circular orbit. Airplanes don't generally go more than a kilometers in the air, so they'd have to go almost 8 km/s to achieve an orbit that low. As the first site points out, that means you'd go around the world in about an hour and a half, which is pretty ridiculous.

What goes wrong of course is that the surface of the earth intersects with the path of this orbit, resulting in a big splat.

a body is said to freefall if it moves under the influence of gravity alone.
satellites are in an orbit due to gravity of earth and moon.
thats why it doesnt hit earth.
it uses escape velocity to exit earths atmosphere.
but if u jump off a plane u will not have escape velocity and u will crash due to gravity.
and more over even if u jump upwards u wont rotate in an orbit because u should me out of our atmosphere.
u should even consider atmospheric pressure

-
Well the earth is not flat, it is round.

The satellites are moving sideways at 1`8000MPH so they do fall but they always MISS the earth

They are over the horizon before they are low enough to hit.

-
Because the plane is not in orbit - it doesn't have enough forward velocity.
