Do asteroids move about quickly (or at all, for that matter)

Star Fox), but in others they seem more docile, if that could be used to describe them.So I was wondering if anyone knows anything about their typical behavior.Thanks.-The difference is that its a real effort to get to an asteroid of any size.......
I was wondering because asteroid fields are depicted as hazardous areas in some fiction (Star Wars, Star Fox), but in others they seem more 'docile', if that could be used to describe them.

So I was wondering if anyone knows anything about their 'typical' behavior. Thanks.

The difference is that it's a real effort to get to an asteroid of any size. Were you to just fly through the belt, you probably wouldn't hit a thing, there's so little mass in such a large space.

A rule of thumb for speed in the solar system is 50km/sec.

Everything in the Solar system that is not a satellite of another solar orbiting object, orbits the sun.

What do you think, they just hang around in space?

Asteroids will collide very infrequently by human lifespan times, but quite frequently when measured against the age of the Solar system.

You could fly through the Asteroid belt blind, a thousand times, without hitting anything.

Science fiction is science fiction.

They are objects in motion. The speed that they would appear to be travelling to you depends on the speed and direction that you are travelling.
This little observation will help. 1st; look at a vehicle travelling with you on the interstate. You're both going the same speed and direction, so it appears to be sitting still. 2nd; look across the median at a vehicle travelling the same speed in the opposite direction. That vehicle appears to you to be travelling twice as fast as it is actually travelling.
Welcome to Einstein's wonderful world of Relativity.

asteroids orbit the sun at about 25 kilometers per second

Asteroids orbit the Sun, same thing goes by Halley's Comet. I assume you'd know by researching Halley's Comet. It orbits the Sun.

Asteroids collide often in Solar System age.
