Assuming an explosion was set off at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, how much energy (in Joules) is needed to destroy it by brute force alone?

Depends on what you mean by "destroy", and what sort of explosion. Something around 10^59 joules should do the job. Maybe as little as 10^57 J, if the explosion was carefully designed. That's about 10^48 J for each star (on average). The explosion would need to push the stars and gas outwards, not waste its energy as light and neutrinos escaping the galaxy.

Of course, it would take many million years for the galaxy's stars to be pushed outwards enough so that somebody could say that the galaxy had been destroyed.
