Who discovered Earth?
Meaning who figured out that Earth was a planet in space?

answers:
Donnie Porko say: It’s up for debate. Copernicus was the first one to propose that earth revolves around the sun but he never provided the evidence to prove it. Galileo and Kepler provided the evidence that earth revolves around the sun based on observations. Newton confirmed it with a mathematical model.

Adullah M say: Adam and Eve of course.

Teajay say: The Yorubas through 'Ifa' about 10,000 years ago.

Const. King say: Hillary did, just ask her.

goring say: mother earth was built and created by our Creators. We can hunt for buffalo for our nutrition. we discovered that we can walk on the earth a bit after we are born.

Ghost Of Christmas Past say: The ancient Greeks were the first to realise that the Earth is a sphere. They had calculated the Earth's diameter by the 3rd century BC. Copernicus postulated that the planets, including the Earth orbit the sun and this was backed up by the observation of many astronomers including Galileo. It wasn't until the 1920s that we finally settled on our current understanding that the Earth is a small planet orbiting an insignificant star at the edge of a spiral galaxy that is only one several thousand galaxies.

Then along came Einstein with the General Theory of Relativity that says there are no fixed points in the universe. You can take any point as your datum and the laws of physics apply to every other part of the universe relative to it. So the geocentric, heliocentric and galactocentric models of the universe are all equally valid - or invalid. This is the point where students of cosmology go to bed with an aspirin.
-
nineteenthly say: It was suspected from about 600 BCE, but firmly established by Eratosthenes in 240 BCE.
-
~~ Auld Lang Syne ~~ say: I think Galileo was one of the discoverers

inaya say: The earliest reliably documented mention of the spherical Earth concept dates from around the 6th century BC when it appeared in ancient Greek philosophy[1][2] but remained a matter of speculation until the 3rd century BC, when Hellenistic astronomy established the spherical shape of the Earth as a physical given and calculated Earth's circumference. The paradigm was gradually adopted throughout the Old World during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.[3][4][5][6] A practical demonstration of Earth's sphericity was achieved by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano's expedition's circumnavigation (1519–1522).[7]

The concept of a spherical Earth displaced earlier beliefs in a flat Earth: In early Mesopotamian mythology, the world was portrayed as a flat disk floating in the ocean with a hemispherical sky-dome above,[8] and this forms the premise for early world maps like those of Anaximander and Hecataeus of Miletus. Other speculations on the shape of Earth include a seven-layered ziggurat or cosmic mountain, alluded to in the Avesta and ancient Persian writings (see seven climes).
