We know the Mayans were excellent astronomers who, like the old world observers of the heavens needed accuracy to drive their calendar systems and inform their astrological charts. However lacking the science of optics and the heliocentric model of the solar system they were no more capable than any other civilisation of the pre-enlightenment world.

At least, as far as we can tell. Any wisdom Mayan civilisation could perhaps have offered Europe up until the scientific upheavals of the 17th century was foolishly destroyed. Catholic priests, determined to eradicate all traces of the Mayan religion took it upon themselves in the mid 16th century to burn all the written records of Mayan civilisation in a sickening act of cultural cleansing. Only a paltry 4 or 5 codices remain today out of many thousands.
