What would happen if an asteroid hit the moon?......

What would happen if an asteroid hit the moon?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
Raymond say: There was one just in the last week!
There are some observatories that continuously film the Moon through their telescope. They allow us to review their videos. Sometimes, we spot "flashes" where small asteroids hit the Moon.
When several observatories record the same flash, it shows that it is not just a glitch in one camera.

Most of the time, these are asteroids so small that the resulting crater is too small to be spotted, even in the best telescopes.
-
Good Bye say: Nothing.
-
Ronald 7 say: There would be a nice new crater on the Moon
Like Tycho
-
Jeffrey K say: It has happened many times. The moon would get another big creator. We would see an explosion for a short time and then lots of dust settling on the moon.
-
. say: Depending on the size, if its a big asteroid, and destroys the moon partially or completely, the Earth's gravity would be altered causing the massive tsunamis.
-
Paula say: It adds one more crater.
There was an asteroid collision on the moon during the recent full moon eclipse.
The moon has no atmosphere, so even tiny asteroids hit the moon. Tiny asteroids can not hit earth because they burn up in earth's atmosphere.

Roger K say: Very little. Some dust gets kicked up and another crater forms. It would not, and <>, do anything like split the moon in to chunks.
-
Clive say: There would be another crater. The Moon gets hit a lot. So does the Earth but the atmosphere burns most of it up unless it's a big asteroid that actually makes it down to the surface, but the Moon has no atmosphere so it gets cratered.

It depends on how big the asteroid is.
-
Crim Liar say: Approximatly 100,000 asteroids with a total mass of 2800kg hit the moon every day!
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: This, basically:

-
The_Doc_Man say: Little asteroids? Not much - the mass of the moon gets increased slightly, which can affect its orbital behavior at a miniscule leve.

Big asteroids? if the moon is damaged and splits up into fragments, we get some ugly meteor showers AND our tides change significantly, which MIGHT (but isn't guaranteed to) change the length of our day.
-
Tom S say: The Moon would get another, but new crater.
-
Sanjay say: It would leave an impact crater.
-
PhotonX say: A bright flash, and a new crater. Same as the millions of other times this has happened. Where do you think all the lunar craters come from, anyway?
.
.
-
Jim say: A new crater. There would be a meteor shower on Earth.

If it is on the near side, we will see a bright flash of light.
-
Robert say: It would make a crater and then float away into space, just like the other asteroids did.
-
Bill-M say: How big of an Asteroid are you asking about??
-
say: Another crater, how big depends on how big an asteroid.
-
Eron_17 say: The moon gets hit a lot, where do you think those craters came from?
-
Modest Genius say: It would rain green cheese for months.
-
AdamTheAtheist say: Another crater.
-
Acetek say: you would have a new crater
