If another galaxy collided with ours would it destroy earth and the entire solar system?......

If another galaxy collided with ours would it destroy earth and the entire solar system?

answers:
Donut Tim say: Probably not. Our Milky Way galaxy is already the result of several galaxy mergers, yet out solar system keeps operating the same after billions of years.

It is difficult to get a "feel" for the incredible amount of space between stars.
-
Athena say: Probably not.
It would be like throwing sand through chicken wire.
Space is big and there is a lot of it between the stars.
-
poldi2 say: No, galaxies are mostly empty space. The stars and planets in the colliding galaxies don't interact. But the clouds of dust and gas in each are affected by changing gravitational fields and a collision often triggers intense star formation in both galaxies.

jehen say: No. Galaxays don't collide they merge. The distance between stars within galaxies is so vast that it is very unlikely for 2 star systems to collide or seriously disrupt one another. If you imagine 2 herds of cattle stampeding toward one another it's easy to visualize the mayhem about to happen. But now imagine if those herds were the size of Texas and each steer was a mile or more away from any other steer. When those herds 'collided', no one would notice. Occasionally a couple of steers happen upon one another. That is about the same when galaxies 'collide'.

Tom say: No as stars are so far apart, the odds are very remote that any two of them from the respective galaxies would even come close. We would likely not know the difference.
-
someg say: Ha! They wouldn't want to try it. We would blow their galaxy away with nukes!
-
Adullah M say: If its collide as such, though our Solar System may not been hit but the whole equilibrium system of the Milky Way Galaxy would come to an end together with out earth.
-
Nyx say: Merging galaxies have so much room between individual stars, that the risk of a collision is minimal.
-
say: No, space is really, really big
-
ocularnervosa say: Not for thousand upon thousands of years.
