Given the opportunity, would you live on another planet than Earth?

answers:
Sanjay say: Yes, Tatooin for instance ...
-
duke_of_urls say: Possibly, but not any other than Earth in the Solar system.
There's likely better planets in this galaxy, for one reason or another.

If we're in a multiverse, there are probably better versions of Earth out there, having histories with less mistakes.

Ronald 7 say: Yes
Probably Mars
-
Eric say: It doesn't matter because there are no planets
-
ChemFlunky say: Depends.

Would I want to live on the moon or Mars or something in the actual plausible future? With the level of development that is likely to occur in my lifetime, at least, probably not. Maybe as a retirement home when I'm really old, if they have such things (lower gravity being a lot kinder to old bones), but other than that, no.

Would I want to live on the moon or Mars or whatever far enough in the future that they've had at least a century or so to work out the kinks? It wouldn't be my preference (I like nature and green things and such), but it probably wouldn't be any worse than living in a really big city on Earth, so if I had a choice between, say, moving to New York or a moon base, I might pick the moon base.

Would I want to live on a newly discovered or newly accessed Earth-like planet? That would probably be pretty cool. Whole new set of biology to discover, frontiers often have exciting new job opportunities, and so on.

Would I want to live on , if I could access same? For a lot of them (eg Beta Colony from Lois McMaster Bujold's work), yes. For a lot of others (eg Dune from Frank Herbert's work), probably not.

Sciencenut say: I personally believe that the movie, "Elysium" is a good representation of the near future of Earth. Except that the high tech, high prosperity society will not be located on an orbiting habitat; it will occur on Mars instead. While our Earth wallows in squalor.
So yes, I will happily move to Mars.

Rowan say: I believe the universe goes in a circle, the big bounce theory, so this universe is just one of an almost infinite amount of variations that happen an infinite amount of times. So, I have already lived on every habitable planet, an infinite amount of times, with an almost infinite amount of different children, wives, and possibly also lived as every other possible alien creature as well, if individuality is an illusion.

the illuminati say: The most likely scenario if we ever have to live on another planet is that you would be eating and drinking nothing but recycled poo and pee for the rest of your life and breathing recycled farts, and everything would be strictly rationed, it would be worse than a maximum security prison.
Thank you but count me out.

Joan H say: No. Not that everything is perfect here (far from it), but for the most part people don't realize what it would really be like to live on another planet that was not like earth in lots of different way.
-
Elisabeth say: Yes, maybe Neptun.
-
CarolOklaNola say: Now? 50/years ago. Maybe, but even then I had enough sense to realize that would NOT happen for a type 1 diabetic. I've never been tall enough for a space suit. Minimum height is 5 feet 2 inches.
-
Nikki say: no, i am a complete home body. i might like to travel, but there is no place like home.
-
Acetek say: yes
