A giant black hole has suddenly appeared in the sky they are saying on the news. What does this mean and could it be the end to earth?
I feel frightened.
-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
Sharon say: It is 55 million lightyears away, and did NOT just appear. It was photographed for the first time.
-
John P say: You did not listen to the news properly. That black hole has existed for a very long time. The news was that it has been photographed - the first time that any black hole has been photographed.

That black hole is over one million trillion miles from our solar system. It poses no danger to us.

In about 5 billion years our Sun will expand and wipe out the solar system including Earth. But since humans have existed in their present form for only around 200,000 years, I don't think that you or I should worry!
-
John say: The claim is using digital photography produced over years and recompiling the photos into one photo a picture of a black hole has been produced.

I suppose it's possible but they haven't proved that there even is a object let alone a black hole there.

They think it might be a black hole and they believe they've produced a picture.

Nothing has 'services' appeared in the sky. Everything is the same except America is beginning to learn it is more numerous than it thought and the aggressive mean foriegn black invaders are actually weak little girls to be toyed with until they are chased back to Europe to clean the chimneys again. (Mary Poppins).

Street cleaning anyone?
-
say: If you go through it, you can never come back, that's pretty effing scary dude.
-
MysteryGuy say: It is million's of light years away... And 1 light year is 6 trillion miles.

Also since it takes take for light to reach us their of a huge chance that that black hole doesn't exist right now.

We are basically looking at the past
-
Ronald 7 say: I was the first time one has actually been photographed
We can finally have a visible study of one and even look for more
At 55 Billion Light Years away it is not going to harm us here down on Earth
We can look back in History to this point in Astronomical History
-
Raymond say: No, it did not "appear".
It is just that this is the first ever photograph of a black hole. That black hole has been around for billions of years and will continue to be there for billions of years more.
The photograph itself is the result of years of work to link together eight telescopes and "adding" together their light (through a special computer program) to get the same result AS IF we had a telescope as large as our planet.

That particular black hole is so far away that it has never been a threat to Earth and will never become a threat to Earth. Just having a photo of it does not make it more dangerous (the black hole, not being a shy human, does not mind having its picture taken).

-----

When the microscope was invented, it became possible to actually see microbes. Did that make microbe suddenly more dangerous? No.
Microbes have been around longer than humans. They have always presented some danger, they will continue to always present some danger. Despite all that, billions of humans continue their lives, our bodies having evolved to exist despite having microbes all around us. The invention of the microscope did not suddenly make microbes more dangerous. It just made it easier for some people to scare other people by showing them pictures of ugly microbes.

This is the same thing. The universe has millions of black holes. This one, in the news, is 55 million light-years from us -- this means EVEN IF it were to come for us, at the speed of light (which it cannot do), it would still take 55 million years to get here.
We already know of black holes that are much closer (even if we cannot photograph them), such as the very big one at the centre of our own Galaxy, 26,000 light-years from us.
There may be one (result of a collapsed star core, following a supernova explosion) that could be "as clase as" 1,500 light-years from us (that is the closest known, I think).

Of course, if you plan to live more than 1500 years, maybe you should worry about it (even though it will never "come for us"). Otherwise, it is only in movies - and in hoaxes, that people worry about black holes in that fashion.
-
D g say: must be ISIS TV . if a black hole was near earth you wouldnt be around to do anything
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: Maybe you should get the whole story... It has not suddenly appeared - it's very, very far away, and has been there for a very, very long time. Using a multitude of telescopes and information - a picture of the black hole has been obtained, for the first time ever. Everything is the same - but, we have obtained more information to study... that's all.
-
MARK say: "... they are saying on the news"
No! They are not.

"A giant black hole has suddenly appeared in the sky ..."
That is not how black holes form.

"I feel frightened."
What of? Ridicule? Is that the reason you hide behind the blue mask of shame.
-
rick29148 say: I'm sure SOMEONE will panic and say that ..............................
-
Sharon say: It is 55 million lightyears away, and did NOT just appear. It was photographed for the first time.

Choose a bloody best answer. It's not hard. say: Troll-lol-lol-lol-loool,

Lol-lol-lol-loool.
-
drake say: It’s very far away.
-
john say: Actually, it's not a picture of the black hole, but of the event horizon. The actual black hole is smaller, but is also not an incredibly small point as a physicist said on Bloomberg news. it's a mathematical point, but that's because the equation goes to a limit of zero. Whatever particles are in a black hole still occupy some real volume of "space"
-
Joyce say: im giggling u lil goofy
-
poldi2 say: No, they finally were able to take a picture of the black hole in the center of M87 (a galaxy a long way away).
It did not suddenly appear, its been there for a long time.
-
Acetek say: idiot
-
dk say: no it will probably all happen again and maybe has already happened
-
Ben say: You have every right and reason to be frightened. Scientists are now saying that we could all be sucked in to the black hole within 18 months so it's time to settle your affairs.
