Where will you find cells with high proportion of ribosomes, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-11] [Hit: ]
-Lots of ribosomes means lots of protein synthesis.Likewise, a high proportion of smooth ER means plenty of lipid synthesis.Mitochondria are supplying lots of energy. So a cell that is generating extra energy, proteins and lipids sounds like one that is growing and getting ready to divide which might mean it is in G2 phase of mitotic cell division.......
Anyone know the location? Need to know for my Final Exam, any help would be appreciated!

Lots of ribosomes means lots of protein synthesis. Likewise, a high proportion of smooth ER means plenty of lipid synthesis. Mitochondria are supplying lots of energy. So a cell that is generating extra energy, proteins and lipids sounds like one that is growing and getting ready to divide which might mean it is in G2 phase of mitotic cell division. Or just an actively dividing cells.

This is only one possible answer. One could make a case for cumulus cells supporting egg growth although one would expect to see lots of mRNA synthesis as well. Or you could name cell types that are normally actively growing such as blood stem cells in bone marrow, the epithelial lining of the digestive tract, dermal skin cells or hair bulb cells.

Finally there is the possibility of smooth endoplasmic reticulum being modified in some specialized cells such as liver cells where the smooth ER is the site of drug and toxin breakdown or the muscle where the smooth ER becomes the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Both of these tissues would require lots of energy so have many mitochondria. I am not as willing to say they are making lots of protein though so the ribosome part doesn't fit as well. Still, one could make a decent argument for these cells as well.

in your muscle cells.
