This causes water to move out of the cells and causes the plant cells to plasmolyze (shrivel up and die). Introduction of water can help change the high salts in the soil by dissolving them and not causing the plant cells to plasmolyze.......
Extensive irrigation in arid regions causes salts to accumulate in the soil. Explain why increasing soil salinity has an adverse effect on agriculture. Suggest a couple of ways to minimize this damage.

I know that the answer is along the lines of diffusion and osmosis. Also there is something to do with the concentration of salt in the soil and how the introduction of water will lower it. Please help me!!

extensive salinity in the soil makes it hypertonic to the walls of the plants. This causes water to move out of the cells and causes the plant cells to plasmolyze (shrivel up and die). Introduction of water can help change the high salts in the soil by dissolving them and not causing the plant cells to plasmolyze.
hope this helps :)
