Biology question, Why have we Evolved Thumbs

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-03-13] [Hit: ]
.. pathogen expulsion? infection protection?......
this is a Biology question that I'm trying to answer;
"Ultimately, why have we evolved thumbs ??"

- because human ancestors who had thumbs left more offspring than those without thumbs
- it is unclear because other animals lack them
- to grasp things
- they allow us to more effectively expel pathogens
- because human ancestors who had thumbs lived longer than those without thumbs
- because human ancestors who had thumbs were less likely to get an infection than those without thumbs

-
We were created with thumbs so the correct question should be "Ultimately, why have thumbs been conserved in humans??"

- because human ancestors who had thumbs left more offspring than those without thumbs

Assuming that some people have been born without thumbs, if that had conferred an advantage in terms of offspring then that trait would tend to become more common.

-
Prehensility - grabbing, grasping, climbing, tool making and manipulation.

Some of those options are offensive to common sense... pathogen expulsion? infection protection?
